How to Care for Dental Sealants

How to Care for Dental SealantsDental sealants are thin, plastic coatings that seal small and narrow grooves on the back teeth surfaces. They help to prevent tooth decay as they protect the teeth from acids known to cause dental caries. The sealants are smooth and easy to clean; hence no bacteria or food particles will settle within the fissures. They are also easy to apply and last for an extended period after hardening.

Dental Sealants Application Procedure

Sealant placement is a quick process. First, the dentist will clean your teeth to remove all food particles and plaque. The dentist will then examine your teeth for any tooth decay. Every tooth is dried and covered by an absorbent material to ensure it stays dry throughout the process.

Sealant is applied onto the chewing surface of every tooth. The dental sealant is then hardened using a curing light. Your dentist can use Ozone gas to reduce or eliminate the bacteria on or around the tooth before sealing. If the dentist identifies a small cavity during tooth examination, a dental laser, air abrasion, or drill is applied to clean out the infection before sealant placement.

Talking Care of Your Dental Sealants

The primary purpose of dental sealants is to prevent cavities and taking care of them is easy. Ensure you continue to practice good oral hygiene even if you have dental sealants. Brush the tops and sides of your teeth properly using a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste. Besides, ensure you continue flossing your teeth and gum line to loosen the bacterial film once a day. Avoid chewy or sticky sugary foods such as taffy, caramel, fruit roll-ups, and ice. Also, avoid taking hard candies like tootsie rolls and starbursts. Drink fluoride water as it helps in repairing damaged teeth. Lastly, visit your dentist regularly for dental check-ups.
