What Should you Expect In A Dental Cleaning?

Posted on 2/6/2023 by Evan
What Should you Expect In A Dental Cleaning?Dental cleanings are a routine part of dental care and maintenance, but what is the process? The truth is that it varies depending on your needs. Some people need to have their teeth cleaned every six months, and some only need them cleaned once a year (or even less). Therefore, there isn't one set answer for this question. But generally speaking, the following steps occur when you get a cleaning:

Examining the Teeth and Gums

The dental hygienist will look at your teeth and gums to see if there are any signs of disease, such as receding gums or cavities. They may also check for other issues like broken fillings that could cause problems down the line. If necessary, they'll let you know what steps need to be taken next to proceed with cleaning.

Cleaning the Teeth

A toothbrush wouldn't do a very thorough job on its own when it comes to removing all plaque from your teeth (and believe me, this stuff is super sticky). The hygienist uses special tools called scalers, which act like mini jackhammers (don't worry about how strong they are, you won't feel a thing). These help scrape away any plaque or tartar built up on your teeth.

Polishing the Teeth

After the scaling is done, it's time for the polish. This helps remove any remaining debris and leaves your teeth looking shiny and healthy. It also helps keep them that way by providing an extra layer of protection against bacteria and plaque buildup.

Finishing Up

Once all of this is finished, the hygienist will give you some instructions on how to take care of your teeth in between cleanings (e.g., brushing correctly, flossing regularly) and send you on your way! If any problems with your teeth or gums need to be addressed, the dental hygienist will let you know what steps to take next.

A dental cleaning is an important part of your oral health care routine. It helps remove plaque and tartar buildup, polish your teeth, and check for any signs of disease. If you have any questions or concerns, be sure to reach out!
