Do Dental Implants Stain Like Natural Teeth

Do Dental Implants Stain Like Natural TeethTooth implants provide a bite and smile that functions like natural teeth. They are lasting and will improve your oral health. Many people receiving these restorations, however, wonder if they can get stained and lose their original beauty.

Dental Implants Resist Stains

Natural teeth have pores where pigments can infiltrate the enamel, causing it to turn yellow. On the other side, dental implants have a nonporous crown, therefore, they don't stain in a similar way to real teeth.

How do Implants Stains

Sadly, even though implants' crowns are nonporous, it doesn't mean they are completely impervious to discoloration. A few things can actually cause them to yellow out and lose their luster. For instance, damage and scratches can occur on the glaze of the crowns. When the glaze incurs scratches, a dull and discolored look is noticed. Pigments can also be trapped in the scratches, contributing further to the staining and discoloration problem.

Additionally, dental implants secured with dental cement may have the cement itself staining. As a result, the implants' appearance is adversely affected. Furthermore, implants may show through your gum tissue. Since implants are fabricated of metal including titanium or zirconia. These dark metals can show in gum, particularly when the gum tissue thins.

How to Prevent Discoloration of Implants

Practicing proper oral hygiene can help keep dental implants as beautiful as they once were when you received them. Make sure you avoid abrasive toothpaste and brush gently rather than aggressively to avert damaging the crown's glaze that protects it from staining. Again, your intake of stain-causing foods and beverages like dark beverages. You might want to use a straw to diminish their direct contact with the teeth.

Can a Dentist Correct Discoloration on Implants?

A dentist can help when your implants are discolored. The dentist may replace the stained cement or provide a new restoration. Remember that traditional teeth whitening isn't effective on implants.
