What Causes Pain After Tooth Extraction?

Posted on 11/1/2023 by Weo Admin
Row of wooden tooth shapes, one of which is being pulled out of the row by dental pliersLosing a tooth when one is growing up is a celebrated event. It means a rite of passage, and the kid is growing. Unfortunately, no one would like to lose their teeth during adulthood. In most cases, many people lose their teeth due to tooth decay, gum disease, injury, or teeth impaction. While a dentist will use anesthesia to prevent discomfort during the procedure, you will likely experience pain after the treatment. Learn 3 reasons for pain after tooth extraction:

Normal Healing

Sensitivity and pain after tooth extraction are part of healing. This discomfort occurs after the anesthesia wears off. However, this should not last for more than three days. During recovery, you will also likely experience side effects such as swelling, bleeding, and tenderness. In most cases, the discomfort responds well to the prescription medication or over-the-counter pain relievers. You can also place ice packs outside the cheeks to soothe inflammation.

Dry Socket

Tooth extraction leaves a tiny hole in the gums. The good thing is that a dentist places a gauze to help in blood clot formation. Unfortunately, the blood clot may fail to develop or can be dislodged before gum tissues fill in the hole. This leads to a dry socket. When food reaches the nerves in the dry socket, you will likely experience pain. Fortunately, a dry socket responds well to good oral hygiene and a medicated gauze.

[[[2:Infections]]]

What is the main reason for tooth extraction? Did it happen as a result of gum disease? Bacteria can accumulate at the extraction site, causing infections. This is more common for people with gum disease or mouth infections. Poor oral hygiene can also contribute to painful infections after tooth extraction. Luckily, oral antibiotics can give you immediate relief. If the pain does not respond to good oral hygiene and medication, it is good to visit a dentist. Call us, and our professionals will help treat issues causing pain after tooth extraction.
