Various Types of Dental Fillings

Posted on 10/11/2021 by Evan
Various Types of Dental FillingsA dental filling is a painless procedure used to restore slight dental fractures or damages caused by tooth decay. Even with advances in dental care and hygiene, tooth decay is a primary problem for numerous American adults and children.

If tooth decay is not timely and adequately treated, it can cause serious dental problems. For this reason, it is crucial to visit us regularly to check any dental problems and tooth decay signs. There are various materials used in dental fillings. They include:

Gold Fillings

Gold fillings are a combination of gold and other metals, with gold occupying the most significant percentage. Despite their cost, they are durable, and with proper care, they can last up to 15 years or more. They can withstand strong chewing forces and do not corrode.

Silver Fillings (Amalgams)

Amalgam fillings include a mixture of silver, tin, copper, and mercury and can last 10-15years. They are less expensive. Silver fillings have an extensive degree of contraction and expansion, which can cause cracks and fractures. Before choosing silver fillings, consult with a dentist because some patients are allergic to amalgam's mercury.

Tooth-Colored Composites

These types of fillings include a combination of plastic resin and powdered glass and are primarily used in front teeth. They bond quickly with the tooth structure. When using tooth composites, we only remove less tooth structure. Nevertheless, they are less durable and require additional visits to a dentist.

Ceramic Fillings

Porcelain is the primary material in ceramic fillings. This type of filling resists staining more than composite materials and can last for at least 15years. They are expensive, however, at almost the price of gold filing.

Although we use all material types in dental filling, certain types suit better for particular conditions. We will help you decide the most suitable material according to your budget and present dental health. Please book an appointment with our office to get more information on dental filling.
