Why Is A Sinus Lift Necessary?

Posted on 1/10/2022 by Evan
Why Is A Sinus Lift Necessary?A jawbone may gradually deteriorate over edentulous areas due to lack of stimulus; and, in the case of the upper jawbone, this could make the sinus membrane above to fall. A sinus lift, then, is a procedure that aims to return the sinus membrane back to its place and recover the lost jawbone volume with a bone graft.

Why Do I Need a Sinus Lift?

We perform sinus lifts when a patient requires dental implants but lacks sufficient bone mass to support it. The jawbone requires constant stimulus from the teeth through the chewing and biting motions, so when a patient loses a tooth, it begins to weaken over time.

Patients who opt for an implant right after a tooth loss may not need a sinus lift, but if they have been having missing teeth for long, it is very likely that their jawbone already lacks enough height and volume to hold an implant. Our sinuses tend to spread over the upper jaw if there are edentulous areas, so it is necessary to lift the sinus in order to make room for a graft that will promote natural jawbone restoration.

How Does the Procedure on a Sinus Lift Works?

A bone transplant is essentially what this procedure entails. It raises the quantity of bone in the upper jaw until it reaches the necessary level to safely place a dental implant. The initial step is to figure out where the need for the surgical bone is. Bone mass from the same patient or a synthetic substance that looks like bone is commonly used.

The patient undergoes anesthesia, and our team begins the procedure. We will gently push the sinus membrane aside and fill the cavity with the chosen graft material. Then, we will seal the wound with sutures, and the patient will be free to return home once the anesthetic has worn off. It is a simple procedure that has a quick recovery time, and the operation does not last more than a couple of hours. If you want to know more about this procedure, please contact us today.
