Posted on 6/6/2022 by Evan
What Causes Tartar Buildup On Your TeethTartar, also known as dental calculus, is a hard deposit that forms on your teeth. It is made up of plaque with hardened food particles, bacteria, and other materials. Plaque is a type of film that sticks to your tooth because of food that you eat, and it leaves behind bacteria and food debris. When plaque is not removed, it turns into tartar, a yellowish or brownish substance that can form on your teeth and can only be removed by a dentist or dental hygienist.

Reasons for Tartar Build-Up

Many factors can contribute to tartar buildup on your teeth. Bad oral hygiene is one of the most common causes. Other causes of tartar buildup include eating sugary or starchy foods, drinking coffee or tea, smoking, and dry mouth. Genetics can also play a role, as some people are more prone to tartar buildup than others. Furthermore, certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, can also increase the risk of tartar buildup.

How to Remove Tartar from Teeth?

Tartar, when left uncleaned, can lead to gum disease and tooth decay, so getting rid of it as soon as possible is essential. If you have any amount of tartar buildup on your teeth, your dentist can remove it with a scaling and polishing procedure. This is done with special instruments to scrape the tartar from your teeth. A fluoride treatment may also be recommended to help prevent future tartar buildup. It should be done every six months to prevent tartar buildup. If you want to help prevent tartar buildup, there are a few things you can do. It includes brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and using an antiseptic mouthwash. This will prevent plaque from turning into tartar. It's also important to see your dentist regularly for professional cleanings. Our dentist can also give you tips on preventing tartar buildup in the future and will remove any tartar that has already formed.
