Common dental problems treated by a general dentist

General dentists handle common and simple dental problems, which can be prevented by maintaining a good oral hygiene routine. It only takes regular brushing, flossing, mouth rinsing a day, maintaining a healthy diet, and regular dental appointments to keep most dental diseases at bay. Preventive care also involves educating yourself on common dental problems like tooth decay and cavities, halitosis, gum disease, dry mouth, and tooth sensitivity.
Oral diseases in general dentistry
Tooth decay, dental caries, or cavities are the most common oral disease treated by a general dentist, as at some point in everyone's life, they most probably experienced it. It is caused by a build-up of bacteria in the mouth that produces acids and erodes the tooth enamel causing decay. Cavities are treated through fillings or crowns when the damage is extensive.
Bad breath is usually a result of poor oral hygiene, medication, or disease. It is also caused by eating spicy foods. It is important to rinse your mouth with water or an antibacterial mouth guard to flush out food debris and bacteria that may result in halitosis. A dental checkup could also be useful in determining the cause of the bad breath and prescribing a diagnosis.
Gum disease can only be treated by a general in its early stages, known as gingivitis. Gingivitis is reversible through a routine dental checkup and a good oral routine. If gingivitis is not treated early, it advances to its more serious form, referred to as periodontitis. A dry mouth is caused by certain medications or certain procedures like chemotherapy. This condition occurs when your mouth cannot produce enough saliva, and it causes bad breath. Teeth sensitivity, on the other hand, is caused by an erosion of the teeth enamel that leaves the dentine exposed. Broken or chipped teeth could also cause it due to disease, trauma, or teeth grinding. The dentist repairs the enamel using crowns and veneers or recommends treatment based on the condition's cause.
